Trooper struck by debris on Alligator Alley after car hits patrol vehicle

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. (WINK) — A Florida Highway Patrol trooper suffered serious injuries after debris from a crash struck him while he was helping a disabled motorist on Interstate 75.

The trooper was standing on the paved shoulder of I-75, known as Alligator Alley, near mile marker 64 in Collier County early Sunday morning. His patrol car, a Dodge Charger with emergency blue lights activated, was parked at an angle partially on the outside travel lane and shoulder.

A vehicle traveling north on I-75 in the outside lane collided with the left front side of the patrol car. The impact separated the left front tire and bumper from the Dodge Charger.

Debris from the collision struck the trooper. He was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

The driver, identified as Jonathan Ronald Munas, 32, of Sarasota, was arrested for DUI with a blood alcohol content of .159. He was transported to the Collier County Jail.

The crash remains under investigation.
