Artist with autism in Punta Gorda finds self-expression through art

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. —

Stop by 31-year-old Mac Morrison's family dinner table, and you'll find sketches in the place of supper.

"Until I say, 'I'm cutting you off,' and I better have a good reason to stop him," said Mac's mother, Sarah.

When Mac was diagnosed with autism, Sarah knew he might say little with words, but to her surprise, on paper, he speaks endlessly.

"He's our own little Google engine when it comes to animals," Sarah said.

It hasn't always been easy for Mac to find a seat at the table.

"The world has to get along with Mac and Mac has to learn to get along with the world," Sarah said.

Uniqueness isn't always rewarded. But with each vibrant illustration, and each turned page, Mac helps us remember that the full story isn't always on the cover.

Sarah imagines, through his artwork, Mac says this, "Just because I'm on the spectrum, just because I'm autistic, I'm a person first. I'm an artist."
