Crews have begun demolishing the IMAG water tower, which has stood at the History and Science Center for the past 90 years, off Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Evans Avenue.
In March, Fort Myers city leaders approved nearly half a million dollars to demolish the water tower after it was determined that it did not meet current safety and building codes.
The iconic water tower stood at about 185 feet tall and is featured in the IMAG logo.
City leaders previously said removing the water tower eliminates a potential safety risk and helps keep the city's water system safe and reliable.
