Woman accused of deadly wrong-way I-75 crash to be arraigned

NAPLES, Fla. (WINK)—Genise Taylor, the woman accused of driving drunk on Interstate 75 and killing a man, is set to make another court appearance.

Taylor is suspected of crashing into 96-year-old Arthur Gilbert, killing him. He would have turned 97 last week.

At 8:30 a.m. Monday, Taylor is expected to appear before a judge for her arraignment hearing. It's happening inside the Collier County Courthouse along U.S. 41, right off Airport Pulling Road.

A judge will formally read the charges against her, then she will enter a plea. But this is where it gets a little more complicated because this has technically already happened.

Her attorney previously filed a waiver of arraignment, and she entered a not guilty plea at the end of March. However, at the beginning of April, prosecutors filed additional charges, so this arraignment is specifically for those new counts.

She was originally charged with DUI manslaughter, a second-degree felony. But now she's also facing additional charges: DUI, damage to person or property, a first-degree misdemeanor; vehicular homicide, a second-degree felony; and reckless driving, damage to person or property, also a first-degree misdemeanor.

One thing many people following the case will be eager to see during this trial is how it is affected by an interaction between Taylor and a Collier County Sheriff's deputy who stopped her two hours before the crash. He declared her unfit to drive and had a friend of hers come pick up her car.

"I don't know enough about it, to be honest with you, to tell you if it's useful for us, if it hurts us, simply because they haven't released that information. We're still at the beginning stages of the case," said Joshua Faett, Taylor's defense attorney.

The deputy is currently at the center of an internal investigation in the department. Last time WINK News checked, he had not been suspended and was working as normal.
