Fort Myers begins construction on affordable housing community for seniors

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Fort Myers is tackling housing challenges for seniors with the construction of Legacy Park II, a $55 million affordable housing community.

The Housing Trust Group held a groundbreaking ceremony for the project, located on Oak Ridge Court in Fort Myers. The development will consist of two five-story buildings with 130 apartments, some of which will be designated for special needs households.

The complex is designed for income-restricted rental housing for seniors aged 55 and older, with monthly rents ranging from $574 to $1,608 for qualifying residents.

“You know, we have housing issues at all levels, in all categories. But, you know, when it comes to seniors, especially those who are on fixed incomes, it makes it that much more challenging for them. So that's why projects like this are just huge for the community,” said Fort Myers Mayor Kevin Anderson.

Jordan Tolman, COO of Housing Trust Group, highlighted the significance of the project, particularly in light of Hurricane Ian’s impact on the area.

“So this is such an important place to be able to bring affordable housing, especially after Hurricane Ian created so much damage in the local area. This is really an opportunity for us to try and make a dent into all the damage and provide brand new affordable housing where seniors can live in dignity, have a beautiful setting, beautiful homes, have common services that can really facilitate their way of life when they're living here,” Tolman said.

Legacy Park II will feature resort-style amenities, including a pool and gym, as well as services like light housekeeping, grocery shopping, daily check-ins, and more. The community is expected to open in about two years.
