Golden Gate community center shelters evacuees from Collier County brush fire

GOLDEN GATE, Fla. (WINK)—The Golden Gate Community Center on Golden Gate Parkway opened as a safe haven for evacuees displaced by the Newman and Beck Boulevard brush fire.

Eric Roach was evacuated by the Collier County Sheriff's Office from his home at the Panthers Walk RV Resort on Beck Boulevard. He arrived at the shelter in his car with his two dogs, cat and mother.

Roach now faces the possibility that he may not have a home to return to.

"I'm just here, and I'm waiting to see if I have a house to go back to tomorrow," Roach said.

When asked where he would go if he couldn't return home, Roach responded with uncertainty.

"We'll figure it out. Honestly, it's just, you know, it's a difficult situation," he said.

Roach is just one of many staying at the shelter. Families, parents, seniors and children have all sought refuge at the community center, and evacuees were allowed to bring their animals.
