Florida Supreme Court names next chief justice

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —

The Florida Supreme Court unanimously elected Justice John Couriel to serve as the next chief justice on Thursday.

According to a media release from the court, Couriel will begin his two-year term in July.

Couriel was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court in 2020 by Governor Ron DeSantis and will succeed Chief Justice Carlos Muñiz, who will remain on the court after completing his term.

Couriel, 48, is the 90th justice of the Florida Supreme Court, and will be the state's 58th chief justice.

“I am grateful to my colleagues for their trust,” Justice Couriel said, “and am indebted to the previous chief justices with whom I’ve served. I will do my best to serve the people of Florida as they so ably have.”
