Right to the Edge: FC Naples’ upset bid falls just short against Orlando City SC

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. (WINK)—The buzz remains in the aftermath of FC Naples' historic match against Orlando City SC.

Naples lost 1-0 in heartbreaking fashion on Wednesday night in the US Open Cup Round of 32. In front of a sellout crowd at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex, FC Naples pushed their MLS opponent to the brink in the club's first-ever match against a club from the top tier of American soccer.

After Orlando City jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half, a defining moment came in the second half. FC Naples came close to sending home an equalizing goal.

The image shared on social media by FC Naples appears to show a ball crossing the line after Orlando City cleared it. No goal was awarded.

In a statement on Thursday, FC Naples said, "There is no postgame avenue to dispute the decision."

On Wednesday night, FC Naples Head Coach Matt Poland applauded his team's performance.

"They competed for 90 minutes against an MLS side and should have been tied 1-1 after those 98 minutes," Poland said.
