Drivers in North Fort Myers are using GPS systems to find alternative routes around the Wilson Pigott Bridge construction, but some are being directed onto private roads, creating frustration for homeowners.
Residents along West Bahia Vista Road have placed a stop sign and a "do not enter" sign to deter drivers, but many vehicles continue to ignore the warnings. Homeowners say drivers have even opened private gates, believing they have the right of way because their GPS systems directed them there.
Kelly Stoops, a neighbor on another private road nearby, shared her reaction to the situation.
"I was shocked that people were actually attempting to open a private gate to gain access to this poor individual's private property," Stoops said.
She also commented on the sign her neighbors created to stop drivers, noting that the traffic they’ve experienced made the behavior unsurprising.
"But also not surprised after what I had experienced that same day," Stoops said.
Homeowners say traffic on their private driveway has increased significantly since the Wilson Pigott Bridge construction began. They blame GPS systems for sending drivers the wrong way down their roads.
