New traffic signs have been installed along East Gator Circle in Cape Coral following a series of recent crashes, as city officials and residents urge drivers to slow down and stay alert on the curved roadway.
The City of Cape Coral said the signs were added on April 8 to warn motorists about an upcoming curve and to encourage compliance with the posted 30 mph speed limit. Officials say the move is part of ongoing efforts to improve roadway safety, but stress that drivers play a critical role in preventing accidents.
"You [have] to be very careful," said Warren Monroe, a Cape Coral resident who rides his bike along the road.
Monroe said speeding is a major issue on East Gator Circle, making the curve particularly dangerous.
"You kind of take your life in your hands," Monroe said.
He added that drivers often race through the area, and the curve catches many off guard.
"They're always racing," Monroe said.
In one incident in March, a man crashed into a power pole, knocking out electricity. His pickup truck nearly hit a home, and Cape Coral police arrested him for a hit-and-run.
Days later, police said a teenager lost control and crashed into a parked car while the homeowners were out of town.
On Thursday, drivers were seen slowing down at the curve, a sight that neighbors appreciate.
"Look at that gentleman slowing down for us. That's what I'm grateful for," said Stephen, a Cape Coral resident.
Neighbors said even if the signs save just one life, they are worth it.
