Cape Coral man accused of stealing woman's Ford Edge, claims she wanted to 'hide it'

CAPE CORAL, Fla. —

A man is accused of stealing a Cape Coral woman's SUV after police said he was found driving the vehicle hours after it disappeared from her driveway.

According to the Cape Coral Police Department arrest report, the woman reported her Ford Edge missing on Monday, after she realized it was no longer parked at her home.

She told officers the SUV had been left unlocked and the key fob was inside.

The woman also reported that a purse and other personal items were inside the vehicle when it was taken.

Lee County sheriff's deputies stopped the SUV later that day and detained William Roy Jones, 56, according to the report.

Investigators said the woman told police she did not give Jones permission to use her vehicle.

A detective interviewed Jones that night at the Lee County jail, where he said he had been dating the woman and claimed she had asked someone else to "hide" the vehicle, and that person dropped Jones off at the car, but police said he could not provide proof.

Jones was booked into the Lee County jail on a charge of grand theft of a motor vehicle, a second-degree felony.
