City leaders in Fort Myers say the long-delayed demolition of City of Palms Park is finally moving forward after multiple delays.
The former Red Sox spring training facility, located along Edison Avenue, has been mostly unused for years, costing taxpayers millions of dollars.
After receiving nine bids for the project, officials decided to award the contract to Honc Destruction, which submitted the lowest offer at approximately $988,000.
The project will completely clear the site, including removing utilities, handling hazardous materials, hauling away debris, and leveling the land.
Once work begins, crews are expected to be on-site for about six months, with additional time needed to wrap things up. The demolition is already funded, and the next steps involve final approvals to get started.
For residents living nearby, this means months of construction, but it also means a vacant landmark will finally have more possibilities for the future.
A meeting to discuss the project is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., Monday, April 20, at City Hall Council Chambers, 2200 Second Street.
