Florida SNAP restricts food purchases to promote healthier diets

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Lawmakers have announced changes to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in Florida.

Officials removed certain items to promote healthier eating and align the program with its goal of providing access to a more nutritious diet.

They said the changes aim to "better align" with SNAP's intended purpose of "providing low-income households access to a more nutritious diet."

What is changing

Under the new guidelines, SNAP benefits can no longer be used to purchase:

• Soda
• Energy drinks
• Candy
• Ultra-processed prepared desserts

What is allowed

Standard fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy products, and most items that make up a typical meal will still be eligible for purchase.

Sports drinks like Gatorade, coffee, tea, granola bars, breakfast pastries and freshly prepared baked goods are also still allowed.
