Free prom haircuts aim to boost confidence, giving back to the community

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (WINK)—As prom season approaches, one local barber shop is making sure every student has the chance to look and feel their best without worrying about the cost. 

Barber Rich is opening the doors of His and Hers Barber and Beauty this Sunday for a full day of free haircuts dedicated to high school students getting ready for prom. From early morning to late evening, the goal is simple: help as many teens as possible walk into their big night feeling confident.

“Everything’s completely free,” Rich said. “I want to get everybody in there, get them fresh, and make sure they look amazing and confident.”

While turnout has been limited in the past due to low awareness, Rich hopes this time will be different, especially with multiple schools preparing for prom.

For Rich, the initiative is about more than just a haircut. It’s about easing the financial pressure many families face.

“In this economy, the cost of living is high,” he said. “Not every parent can afford a $40 or $60 haircut. This way, they can save that money for outfits, shoes, or dinner.”

The idea to give back is rooted in Rich’s personal journey. After serving time in prison, he said he returned to the community with a new perspective and a desire to make a difference.

“I took from the community before, so now I just want to give back,” Rich said. “Cutting hair is my skill, and this is how I can help people.”

Growing up in poverty also shaped his outlook. He recalls relying on community support during the holidays, something that now motivates him to pay it forward.

Beyond prom, Rich regularly offers discounted services for veterans, first responders, and military members, and often surprises families in need with free haircuts.

Inside the barbershop, the experience goes deeper than the chair. Rich says many young clients open up about their lives, turning a simple appointment into something more meaningful.

“Sometimes it’s like a therapy session,” he said. “If I can give them a little guidance or help them feel better about what they’re going through, that matters.”

As one of the most memorable nights of high school approaches, Rich hopes students take advantage of the opportunity.

“Prom is a big night,” he said. “They’re going to want to look good and feel good, and now they can do that without worrying about the cost.”
