Lee Utilities customers may notice temporary change in taste, odor and color of water

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)— Lee County Utilities will temporarily switch its water disinfectant process from chloramines to free chlorine from May 1 through May 21.

According to a press release, this is a routine measure common for water utilities that use chloramines as the primary disinfectant. The temporary conversion is designed to ensure customers receive clean, safe drinking water.

The utility warns that anyone who uses a kidney dialysis machine at home should contact their equipment supplier to have proper filtering equipment installed. Tropical fish or aquatic animal owners should also contact a local tropical fish store for appropriate pretreatment of water before adding it to tanks.

Customers may notice a temporary change in the taste, odor and color of their water during this period, but the press release states this is not harmful. The changes are a normal part of the routine disinfection process.
