Pediatric dental program earns autism-friendly certification

Healthcare Network’s pediatric dental program has earned the Certified Autism Center (CAC) designation through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), recognizing its specialized training to support autistic and sensory-sensitive children.

The CAC designation is awarded to organizations whose staff complete evidence-based training focused on understanding sensory processing differences and communication styles.

Dr. Douglas Keck, dental director for Healthcare Network, explained why dental visits can be particularly challenging for some children.

“Dental offices are full of sensory input, sounds, lights, smells, and vibrations that adults often tune out but can overwhelm children with sensory sensitivities. For autistic children, unpredictability and communication differences can increase anxiety. When children feel overwhelmed, even a simple checkup can become stressful for both the child and their caregivers,” Keck said.

Simple adjustments at Certified Autism Centers can make a significant difference, such as dimming overhead lights, offering quieter tools, allowing children to explore instruments before use, providing slower-paced visits, creating calm spaces, and offering visual guides or social stories to prepare children.
