How to protect your home during a red flag warning

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. (WINK)—Fire safety experts are urging residents to inspect their properties and remove flammable materials as dry conditions increase wildfire risk.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for parts of Southwest Florida from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, including Lee, Charlotte, and DeSoto counties.

Homeowners should clear leaves from roofs, gutters and the base of walls. Wicker lawn furniture, cushions, wood piles near buildings and flammable doormats should also be removed or relocated.

Beyond clearing debris, residents should reconsider certain outdoor activities during dry conditions. Experts recommend avoiding barbecues or fire pits outdoors and refraining from using heat sources or open flames, including cooking, power tools or lawn mowers. Smoking outdoors should also be avoided.

Driving or parking on dry grass or vegetation can spark fires. Residents should stay clear of closed areas and remain vigilant when visiting public lands at risk for wildfires.

"We haven't seen too major of any fires recently, but that can change with one little spark," said Megan Price, Public Information Officer for Lehigh Acres Fire.

Price said to be aware of your surroundings and what could possibly cause a fire.

"Know what's around you, vegetation-wise, what things you have in your possession that cause heat, have hot exhaust, have sparks, and really just being aware of how you use those during these dry conditions," Price said.

The key is awareness and intentional action. Residents should take time to inspect their properties for potential fire hazards.
