Lee County commissioners set to approve land purchases for Alico Road extension

LEE COUNTY, Fla. —

Lee County commissioners are preparing to approve land purchases needed for the next phase of the Alico Road extension project, which aims to address safety concerns and accommodate rapid growth.

People like Thurman Massa, who grew up here along our Gulf Coast, expressed the need for projects like these as more people continue to move in, saying, "Every year it just gets worse. It's like an hour drive from Naples to Fort Myers, and with no traffic, it's 30 minutes."

The commissioners are set to approve two pieces of land along State Road 82.

One property, just over half an acre, would cost approximately $30,000. The second property, nearly 12 acres, is priced at just over $2.7 million.

Officials said the purchases are strategic and help avoid taking property owners to court, which could delay the project and further increase costs.

The funding for these acquisitions will come from road impact fees, not property taxes.

The goal of the project is to keep construction on schedule and improve the road as soon as possible to make driving safer and less of a headache.

The meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
