Marco Island City Councilor Erik Brechnitz passes away at 87

MARCO ISLAND, Fla. (WINK) — The City of Marco Island has announced that Councilor Erik Brechnitz passed away on Tuesday. He was 87.

In an official statement from the City of Marco Island, Brechnitz served on the city council up until his death.

According to the city, Brechnitz was a longtime public servant who moved to Marco Island in 1995 after serving on the City Council in Decatur, Illinois, for 10 years and as the City’s mayor for 4 more years. 

Brechnitz was then elected to the Marco Island City Council in November 2018 and was appointed by his co-Councilors to serve as Chairman four out of his nearly eight years on the dais. 

He also served as Chairman of the Marco Island Community Parks Foundation since January 2021.
