Officials: 15-acre brush fire in Collier County believed to be caused by lightning

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. (WINK)— Florida Forest Service and Greater Naples Fire Rescue District are on scene attending to a 15-acre brush fire believed to be caused by lightning.

The fire, located on Sabal Palm and Irgang roads, was reported on Tuesday and is currently 90% contained per the Florida Forest Service.

According to Weather Authority Meteorologist Josh Green, the reasoning behind why lightning may be the cause of the fire stems from Monday evenings cold front that moved through southern Collier County, which brought few storms within the area.

This brush fire comes amid a Red Flag Warning issued for Tuesday. A Red Flag Warning means a combination of weather factors is coming together that can support the development and rapid growth of fires.

Currently, officials are not calling for evacuations within the area. 

While on scene, Florida Forest Service representatives ask the public to remain mindful of increased fire risks throughout April and May, as these are the peak months of the brush fire season.

Some tips to minimize risk include properly disposing of cigarettes, avoiding parking on dry grass, and adhering to burn ban regulations.
