Red Flag Warning covers all of Southwest Florida, spikes fire risk

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, (WINK)—A Red Flag Warning has been issued for parts of Southwest Florida from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, which now includes Lee, Charlotte, DeSoto, Collier, Hendry, and Glades counties.

A Red Flag Warning means a combination of weather factors is coming together that can support the development and rapid growth of fires. On Tuesday, those ingredients include low humidity, gusty winds, and warm temperatures.

Isolated rain and storms pushed through Southwest Florida Monday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough to make a meaningful impact. A substantial amount of rainfall is still needed to help ease ongoing drought conditions across the region, especially considering how dry it has been in recent weeks.

Behind a passing cold front, much drier air will filter into Southwest Florida. This will cause humidity levels to drop, allowing grass and vegetation to dry out quickly and become more combustible.

At the same time, winds will shift out of the northwest and increase to 15 to 20 miles per hour, with even stronger gusts at times. These breezy conditions can help any fires that develop spread more quickly and unpredictably.

Afternoon temperatures will climb into the low to mid 80s, adding additional stress to already dry fuels.
