Naples reminds residents about sea turtle nesting season on Earth Day

NAPLES, Fla. —

The City of Naples has issued a reminder on Earth Day about the official start of sea turtle nesting season on May 1.

Hatchlings will soon head into the water, but threats like pollution, climate change and disorientation are negatively affecting them.

When they hatch, turtles rely on the moonlight and other natural locators, but things like artificial lighting, disturbances and obstacles can disorient them and draw them away from the Gulf. When that happens, they may be at risk of death from roads, predators and exhaustion.

The artificial lighting can affect nesting turtles as well, which can lead to potential injuries or death.

The city said they sent a mailer to beachfront residents and business owners that is meant to outline ways to help protect nesting turtles and hatchlings during nesting season.

The following are actions the City of Naples recommends people should take:

• Reduce lighting: Use turtle‑safe lighting, switch off unnecessary outdoor lights and close window coverings at dusk, and forgo flashlights.
  
• Respect nests: Nests are delicate. Please observe from afar and without flash photography.
  
• Clear paths: A clear path to the water boosts their odds of survival. Fill in holes, flatten sandcastles, and leave no trace - no trash, no chairs, no umbrellas.
  
• Report concerns: Report turtles in distress to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at 1-888-404-3922 or online using FWC's Wildlife Alert system.
