Street racing on Lee Boulevard in Lehigh Acres leads to arrest, second driver still at large

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. —

A street racing incident on Lee Boulevard in Lehigh Acres late Monday night led to the arrest of one driver, while another reportedly escaped, authorities said.

Shaun Green, a Lehigh Acres resident, described the area’s late-night activity. "After it hits 10:30, this becomes like a racetrack," Green said.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy observed two vehicles reportedly speeding significantly over the limit near Lee Boulevard and Bruce Avenue. The cars were clocked at 73 mph in a 45 mph zone.

The deputy arrested Daniel Maxwell, 21, one of the drivers, after he was accused of attempting to evade being caught by turning off his vehicle’s lights, deputies said. Maxwell eventually stopped on 7th Street West after turning off Lee Boulevard.

"If I was on the road, I would be fuming just watching them put so many lives at danger, it’s crazy," Green said.

Green also commented on the prevalence of reckless driving in the area. "Lotta speedsters like to come out here and just driving crazy like it's their road or something," he said.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said the second driver, who was reportedly in a dark-colored car, remains at large. Anybody with information is asked to contact the sheriff's office.
