Fort Myers volunteers pack thousands of meals at Harry Chapin Food Bank

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)— WINK News has partnered with the Harry Chapin Food Bank through the WINK Serves initiative to help fight hunger in Southwest Florida.

Throughout the week, dozens of volunteers rolled up their sleeves to pack boxes, sort food, and give their time at the Harry Chapin Food Bank. That help is more than appreciated—it's essential.

"It's sad to say that people in the community have to depend on this," Ritch, a volunteer, said.

Some were first-time volunteers, while others made it a regular habit. Together, they're helping fight food insecurity across the area.

"The community needs everybody's help, and people who are not so fortunate need our help," Paul Furbay, a volunteer, said.

"It's helping people. You meet new friends, and you feel good about doing this," Karen, a volunteer, said.

"I feel better when I'm helping people. I know that families are going to have food on their table," Raymond Pratt, a volunteer, said.

While the week may be wrapping up, the need isn't. The food bank serves thousands of families every month and relies heavily on volunteers to keep operations moving.

"Love to end hunger. Hopefully that would happen in my lifetime," Paul Desalvo, a volunteer, said.

Ritch emphasized how manageable volunteering can be.

"3 hours in the morning or the afternoon, that's it. They are always looking for people here, and it's something everyone should consider. If you've got time, you're a retiree like me, you got some time, come down and spend some time here," Ritch said.

Making a difference doesn't take much—just a love for your community and a willingness to show up.
