Sailboat hits power line in San Carlos Bay, causes brief surge

LEE COUNTY, Fla. —

A sailboat crashed into a power line in San Carlos Bay, causing a power surge Wednesday evening.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, a 42-foot sailboat with two occupants hit a power line in San Carlos Bay. The boat sustained minor damage, and the occupants were uninjured.

The Lee County Electric Cooperative said the boat struck the power line at 5:49 p.m., which caused the line to be de-energized.

Once the boat safely cleared the power line, LCEC was able to re-energize it at 5:50 p.m.

LCEC said about 10,000 customers experienced a one-minute power surge.
