Wilson Pigott Bridge reopens, ending traffic nightmare for drivers

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)—The Wilson Pigott Bridge reopened Thursday morning after a 10-day closure that caused major traffic delays for drivers in North Fort Myers and Babcock Ranch.

"To get out there at the time that she needed to, it probably would have taken her a good hour and a half, two hours," said Scott Anderson, a Babcock Ranch resident. "What people in Babcock were saying, at least."

The Florida Department of Transportation opened the bridge at 10:30 a.m. WINK News was at the scene throughout the day, monitoring traffic conditions.

Carol Jacoby, also a Babcock Ranch resident, expressed relief about the reopening.

"I am thrilled with that," Jacoby said. "You know, I had to leave today, and I'm like, my Waze says the bridge is open and I'm like, ‘Okay, I'm heading that way.’”

The closure also impacted local businesses. Dan Beaulieu, owner of the Five Guys in Babcock Ranch, said his restaurant saw a drop in sales during the 10-day period.

"I think a lot of people are starting to avoid this area just because of the traffic right now," Beaulieu said.

Despite the loss, Beaulieu said he understands the closures are necessary for long-term growth in the rapidly expanding community.

"Babcock Ranch is a growing community, growing fast," Beaulieu said. “We're looking forward to the long-term setup of these roads. I think it'd be good for every business around here."

FDOT thanked the public for their patience during the project. The agency indicated this may not be the last closure, as a new bridge could be coming in 2028.
