Florida law bans obstructive license plate frames and covers

Florida drivers will need to ensure their license plates are fully visible as a new law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis prohibits anything that interferes with the ability to read or record them.

The law bans tinted covers, protective films, reflective sprays and frames that block numbers, letters or registration stickers on license plates.

Kristen McKenzie of Cape Coral feels there are bigger fish to fry. "I think there's better things in life to worry about, quite honestly," McKenzie said.

This update follows confusion caused by a law passed last year regarding what was and was not permitted concerning license plate frames. The new rules clarify that frames are allowed as long as they do not cover any essential part of the plate.

Knowingly breaking the law could result in a second-degree misdemeanor.

Carol Pridgen, also from Cape Coral, says to continue to follow the rules. "I don't think it's a big deal at all, but at the same time, I don't want a ticket. So, that's what you do," Pridgen said.

The law takes effect on Oct. 1, giving drivers time to double-check their plates to ensure compliance.
