A man was arrested Thursday morning after being accused of driving under the influence and crashing his SUV at the intersection of Airport-Pulling Road and Glades Boulevard in Collier County.
Deputies said Kevin Barnhill, 65, was accused of driving impaired in the right lane when he attempted to change lanes and hit another car.
“DUI, though, at 10 a.m.! That's kind of crazy,” said Naples resident Jim Currier.
When deputies arrived, they said Barnhill exhibited slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and smelled of alcohol.
Barnhill told deputies he was coming from his house and heading to the Collier County Courthouse to file for divorce, according to the report.
Deputies said Barnhill had a blood alcohol level of 0.164 and 0.157, near and over twice the legal limit, after failed field sobriety exercises.
The arrest report says an empty wine bottle was reportedly found inside his SUV after the crash.
“People go a little fast around here, you know. Heavy traffic, so yeah, stuff's going to happen,” Currier said.
This incident is reminding other drivers on the road to never drink and drive.
“That's what Uber's for,” Currier said. “Slow down. Take your time.”
Barnhill was taken to the Collier County Jail and later released on bond. No injuries were reported in the crash.
Barnhill faces a charge of DUI with property damage.
