Newly released 911 call reveals final moments of Arcadia shooting victim

ARCADIA, Fla. (WINK)— A disturbing 911 call reveals the final moments of Barbara Bates, who became the second victim in a deadly shooting at the Jacaranda Trails Apartment Complex.

Arcadia police say Bates called 911 last Friday, telling dispatchers she saw a man shoot and kill Tanika Summers. Seconds later, more gunshots rang out during the call.

WINK News obtained the five-minute 911 recording, though portions are too graphic to share. Bates only speaks for the first few seconds before gunshots can be heard.

By the time Bates called 911, Summers had already been shot multiple times in the parking lot by Eric Robinson, according to the Arcadia Police Department. Bates called for help at 9:14 a.m., one minute after deputies started responding.

The Hardee County Sheriff's Office answered the call, even though DeSoto County was responding to the scene. Hardee County says they pick up 911 calls if there are too many coming in at one time.

After Bates' initial report, the next five minutes of the call only captured the sound of a TV in the background and the dispatcher asking four times for Bates' address. The dispatcher asked if Bates was shot, then asked four times if she was still on the line.

The Arcadia Police Department says Bates was shot through her window by Robinson during the call. Toward the end of the recording, the dispatcher can be heard saying, "I'm hoping they would check on her, but I have no idea."

Officers found Bates dead in her apartment just after 1 p.m. Her family said they do not want to comment about her death at this time.
