Jury selection begins for Cape Coral murder trial of 15-year-old Kayla Rincon-Miller

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)— Jury selection began for the trial of a teen accused of killing a 15-year-old Cape Coral girl in March 2024.

18-year-old Thomas Stein is charged with first-degree murder with a firearm and three counts of attempted robbery with a firearm.

Cape Coral police said Kayla Rincon Miller and her friends were walking to a McDonald's off Del Prado Boulevard after a movie in Cape Coral when she was shot and killed.

Stein was arrested just days later. Now, two years after her death, the State Attorney's Office says if he is found guilty, he could face life in prison.

The State Attorney's Office also said they didn't reach an agreement on a plea deal.

WINK News reporter Bella Line is at the Lee County Courthouse as potential jurors go through standard questions, such as whether they have heard the case before and whether they are willing and able to serve as jurors for the five-day trial.

The trial is expected to last five days.
