CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — One of the teenagers accused of being involved in the shooting death of 15-year-old Kayla Rincon-Miller faces trial for first-degree murder more than two years after she was gunned down.
Jury selection is expected to begin Monday, with the trial centered around what investigators said was a robbery that turned deadly. One of the biggest pieces of this case is that jurors are expected to hear from the other teenager already convicted in the crime.
Prosecutors said Thomas Stein was involved in the shooting death of Rincon-Miller in March 2024. Police saID she was walking with friends near Del Prado Boulevard when a group pulled up in an SUV, got out with guns and demanded their belongings.
Shots were fired, killing Rincon-Miller. She had been walking from the Coralwood Movie Theater to a nearby McDonald's when the shooting happened.
The other teenager charged in the case, Christopher Horne Jr., has already pleaded no contest to second-degree murder. He is now expected to testify in this trial.
As this case heads to court, loved ones said their focus is on making sure Kayla is never forgotten.
"I just want her to be remembered as a beacon of light, and hope that it wasn't [that] she was lost just for good, that you can turn a loss into something beautiful," said Tatiyana Rincon, Kayla's sister.
The trial is expected to last through the end of the week. WINK News will be in the courtroom bringing updates.
