Burnt Store Road construction reduces lanes as Cape Coral residents react to improvements

CAPE CORAL, Fla. —

Crews have reduced the southbound side of Burnt Store Road in Cape Coral to one lane as part of a $2 million resurfacing project to address crumbling asphalt and improve the busy roadway.

Construction began Monday morning, and Cape Coral resident Jamie Francisco said the work was impossible to ignore.

"Construction started this morning, and my whole house was vibrating as they were tearing up the cement," Francisco said.

Francisco, who lives 30 yards off Burnt Store Road, said she has been frustrated with the road conditions for months.

"I've been complaining for the last couple of months because it feels like rumble strips," Francisco said.

The county said the resurfacing aims to make commutes and hurricane evacuation routes smoother. Workers were seen removing asphalt this afternoon, with orange cones, barricades, and flaggers in place to manage traffic.

Cape Coral resident Carol Sandra shared her thoughts on the temporary inconvenience.

"Well, it's down to one lane, but, hey, by the time it gets done, I'll love it. And I'm sure everybody else will, too," Sandra said.

Sandra added, "I'm looking forward to it."

Another resident said she plans to adjust her routine during the construction.

"Repaving really does need to take place, but knowing that it's going to take that long, I think I'm going to plan my trips to town once a week, and then I'm just going to harbor inside and enjoy home," she said.

While some residents expressed concerns about traffic congestion, the county said the majority of the work, including lane closures, will last about two weeks. The project is expected to be completed by the end of summer, depending on the weather.
