Collier County considers higher parking fines to address violations

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. —

Collier County is proposing a plan to increase parking fines, with penalties starting at $75, doubling to $150 for a second offense and rising to $250 for repeat violations.

Residents have voiced their support for the initiative. "I think it's a wonderful thing. And if you just do the responsible thing and you pay when you come over and visit or, then there is no violation, right?" said Catherine Haffey of Collier County.

The proposal also introduces a new late fee, which could result in additional costs of hundreds of dollars, plus court fees in some cases.

The county stated that the plan is aimed at cracking down on individuals who ignore parking rules, particularly those who block handicap spaces or roadways. Additionally, the county is expanding its authority to tow vehicles when necessary.

Donavee Cote of North Naples Runners shared her thoughts on the issue, saying, "I think people just haphazardly park wherever they want to as long as they want, and they should pay extra for that."

Haffey added that the increased fines could encourage people to reconsider their parking habits. "It makes people really think about violating the parking laws here. So yeah, I think it's absolutely justifiable," she said.
