LaBelle breaks ground on new high school after nearly 3 decades

LABELLE, Fla. (WINK)—Hendry County District Schools broke ground Tuesday on a new high school, marking the first new school built in the county in nearly three decades.

The current LaBelle High School was built in the 1970s and needs replacement. Superintendent Michael Swindle said the district identified the need for a new school four and a half years ago.

"Four and a half years ago, we identified the fact that we needed a new school," Swindle said. "Our footprint needed to grow. Not only were we crowding on space, but the footprint and the age of our fleet of schools was aging."

Students at LaBelle High School said the school has helped them discover their passions through various programs. Aubrey, a junior, said she found her path through the school's FFA program.

"Through the many programs at Labelle High School, specifically through FFA, I've been in it since my freshman year, and it's helped me find who I am and what I want to do with my life," Aubrey said.

Matthew Slade, a senior, said the school's programs helped prepare him for his future. He recently signed with the army.

"I actually just signed for the army," Slade said. "So this academy and the programs that I've been in throughout the years have definitely pushed me to believe that I can do anything that I want to do."

The new school will feature expanded programs and more space for students. Aaron Gonzalez, a sophomore, said he is looking forward to the additional educational opportunities the new building will bring.

The construction team includes former LaBelle High School graduates. Taylor Sawatzky, senior director of business development and marketing with Owen-Ames-Kimball, said being part of the project is meaningful to him as a graduate of the school.

"Being a graduate from LaBelle High School, to be a part of the team, it's just I couldn't be more proud," Sawatzky said.

Swindle said he looks forward to the day the new school opens its doors to students and the community.

"I can't wait till the day we cut the ribbon and we move in and see the excitement of all the students and the leaders in the community, because this truly is going to be the front porch of LaBelle," Swindle said.
