Photos: Naples turns pier wreckage into artificial reef

NAPLES, Fla. —

The City of Naples, in collaboration with Shoreline Foundation, Inc., and marine and environmental engineers Turrell, Hall & Associates (THA), successfully deployed 59 concrete pilings from the demolished Naples Pier to the Wasmer Reef site, approximately 10 miles offshore of Gordon Pass in the Gulf.

The city told Gulf Coast News, "remaining pier pilings not destined for the reef have also been diverted from the landfill. They were delivered to a recycling facility, where they will be processed into recycled concrete aggregate for use in road construction."

The city also said the Wasmer Reef is now more than a decade old.

It is thriving and hosts corals, aquatic vegetation, invertebrates, bivalves, and tunicates that provide refuge and food for juvenile and mature fish species alike.
