Scout Comics gives away 3 free comics per person for Free Comic Book Day

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — Scout Comics is giving away three free comics per person on Saturday as part of Free Comic Book Day, inviting the Southwest Florida community to step inside and explore the world of comics.

Doors open at 9 a.m., and visitors can choose from a wide variety of titles ranging from major publishers like Marvel Comics and DC Comics to independently created stories produced right at Scout.

The event itself dates back to 2002, when comic shop owner Joe Fields launched the idea of giving away comics to bring new readers into local shops. The concept quickly took off, with more than two million comics distributed across 2,200 locations during its first year, and it has continued to grow ever since.

At Scout Comics, that mission aligns closely with what they do year-round. The Fort Myers-based company focuses on publishing independent comics and elevating diverse storytellers, with a goal of bringing fresh, original stories to audiences around the world.

Owner James Haick hopes this event brings out new readers.

"The point of Free Comic Book Day is to get those new or curious readers out here. It can be a great alternative for kids who don't enjoy reading," Haick said.

Visitors on Free Comic Book Day will not only get free comics, but also a chance to experience what makes Scout unique. The shop publishes its own titles, including stories like “The Mall,” which is loosely inspired by the Edison Mall, giving readers a local connection. Alongside the free giveaways, there will be in-store discounts, online incentives, and a first look at the store’s newly revamped, multi-publisher layout, including an expanded section for young readers.

Well-known artist Greg Krivac will also be on-site, creating custom covers and showcasing his work, adding to the interactive experience. Local author of 'Sam and his talking gun, Lee Ferguson, will also be there signing comics.
