Ghirardelli recalls 14 chocolate drink mixes over salmonella risk

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, (WINK) — Ghirardelli Chocolate Company is voluntarily recalling certain powdered beverage mixes due to potential Salmonella contamination.

The recall follows a milk powder recall by California Dairies, Inc. over salmonella concerns. The milk powder was supplied to a third-party manufacturer and used as an ingredient in the powdered beverage mixes, according to the press release from the U.S Food and Drug Administration.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea that may be bloody, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare cases, the infection can result in the organism entering the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses. These include infected aneurysms, endocarditis and arthritis.

The affected beverage mixes are packaged in large formats intended for food service and institutional customers. However, some powdered beverage mixes may also have been available for purchase by consumers through e-commerce platforms, the press release said.

No illnesses have been reported to date.
