A Sunday evening drum circle at Centennial Park in downtown Fort Myers turned chaotic when a truck driven by a man accused of drunk driving sped through the park, damaging a light post and a tree.
Ocianna, a member of the Fort Myers drum circle, described the incident.
"We're drumming in the pavilion, and through the parking lot under the bridge comes this truck speeding, totally up over that thing. Then he hits the light, and it burst into a million pieces," she said.
Fort Myers police said Jesus Morales was drunk when he drove through the park. Witnesses reported seeing him plow into a light post and snap a tree.
Ocianna reflected on the close call for those in the park.
"That was the grace of God. That couple, love saved them because he pulled her so tight," she said.
Kelly LePierre, who saw the damaged truck, expressed relief that no one was hurt.
"It could have been a tragic event. Someone could have lost a child or, you know, a parent or something really bad could have happened today would've ended up in, like, a candlelight vigil. But, you know, I'm very thankful that the cops got him, and, you know, he's going to be probably paying for his court decision for a long time," LePierre said.
Morales, 19, was arrested and faces more than 10 charges, including DUI, hit-and-run and threatening a law enforcement officer.
