Cinco de Mayo Meets Taco Tuesday in first-ever downtown Fort Myers block party

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)—Fort Myers is turning up the heat this Cinco de Mayo with a celebration that only comes around once in a while. 

For the first time, Hendry Street will shut down to host a full-scale block party, bringing together food, drinks, music, and culture right in the heart of downtown.

The event, led by local hotspots Escondido Lounge, Taco Worx, and Cowboy Up Saloon, will transform the street into a lively festival packed with tequila tastings, street-style eats, and live entertainment. 

And this year, the timing adds even more excitement as Cinco de Mayo lands on Taco Tuesday.

Guests can expect a wide range of tequila and mezcal tastings, giving both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts a chance to explore different flavors and styles. Drink specials will include $6 margaritas and mezcalitas, $5 Cazadores shots, and $9 signature cocktails.

For Escondido mixologist Nick Forbes, the event is about more than just drinks. He said tequila offers an opportunity to educate people about culture and craftsmanship.

“Education is always power. When it comes to tequila, quality can be a big difference between not only the aging of the tequila but also the age of the agave plant. It helps me serve better tequila,” Forbes said.

Of course, no Cinco de Mayo celebration would be complete without food. Taco Worx will be serving up tacos, burritos, salsa, and more, featuring new recipes designed to stand out during the festivities. 

The event will also feature live music and entertainment throughout the day, adding to the high-energy atmosphere organizers hope will bring the community together. You can even catch a mariachi there! 

Event organizers Brad Cozza and Ozzie Morrobel say the idea came naturally.

“The stars aligned. It’s Taco Tuesday and Cinco de Mayo. How could we not do something?” Cozza said. “We are partnering with Cowboy Up for this event. It’s going to be such a great time, and we hope to see everyone out.”

The block party begins at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, marking a milestone moment for downtown Fort Myers as it hosts its first Cinco de Mayo street celebration.
