Flags flown at half-staff in honor of Marco Island City Councilor Erik Brechnitz

MARCO ISLAND, Fla. —

Governor Ron DeSantis ordered that all United States and State of Florida flags at government buildings throughout Marco Island be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, in honor of former Marco Island City Councilor Erik Brechnitz.

In a statement released on Monday, DeSantis instructed that the flags be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol in Tallahassee and all local and state buildings, installations and grounds throughout the City of Marco Island.

Brechnitz died on April 21 at the age of 87.

Brechnitz was elected to the Marco Island City Council in November 2018. Brechnitz served on Marco Island's planning board after he moved to the island in 1995, before he was elected to the city council. The City of Marco Island said Brechnitz was appointed by his co-councilors to serve as chairman four out of his nearly eight years on the dais.

He also served as chairman of the Marco Island Community Parks Foundation since January 2021.

Brechnitz's family announced his funeral service will be held on May 9.
