Lee County approves skate park at Schandler Hall Park

LEE COUNTY, Fla. —

Lee County commissioners have decided to convert a baseball field at Schandler Hall Park into a skate park, with construction beginning this summer and completion expected by next spring.

The skate park will feature ramps, rails, and pipes for skateboarding and rollerblading, offering a new recreational space for the community. Visitors to the park, including Jayden and his sisters, shared their excitement about the project.

"I'm interested in it because I have never seen a skate park in Fort Myers before so it might be the first one," Jayden said.

Mack Young, director of parks and recreation for Lee County, explained the reasoning behind the decision.

"We decided to, there was a small baseball field there, and it wasn't getting used that much. So, we decided to put some that we think the community would use for the kids," Young said.

Currently, Lee County's only skate park is located at Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres. Jayden's sister, Jaylani, shared her thoughts on the new park.

"Like, it would be safe if they, if they have handles and stuff so they can grab on it so they don't, like, go down," Jaylani said.

The new skate park is expected to cost more than $589 million.
