NAPLES, Fla. (WINK)— A jury found two people guilty in connection with a 2023 shooting that left a couple seriously injured on Immokalee Road.
Ryan Guy Toranzo and Rebecca Zeldi Gabay were convicted following a seven-day trial in Collier County.
Toranzo was convicted of two counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm and one count of shooting at or within a vehicle. Gabay was convicted of two counts of accessory after the fact.
On June 1, 2023, a man and woman were driving home along Immokalee Road after a night out when someone in a passing vehicle opened fire on their truck.
The woman, who was driving, was shot in the head and crashed the truck. Her boyfriend was also shot in the head.
Both survived but required extensive medical treatment and suffered life-altering injuries.
Prosecutors say there had been an ongoing child custody dispute between the male victim and his ex-wife, Gabay. The victim was scheduled to start receiving more time with his children just days after the shooting occurred.
Evidence showed Toranzo, who was dating and living with Gabay, was the shooter and Gabay arranged the shooting. A van from the audio business she owned was tied to the crime.
Gabay also sent threatening messages to the victim before the shooting.
The defendants fled to New Jersey with her children immediately after the shooting. The Collier County Sheriff's Office located them and made arrests in New Jersey.
A third person charged in the case, Julian Wolf, testified against his co-defendants as part of a plea agreement. He said he was in the van with Toranzo and drove while Toranzo fired the shots.
Sentencing is scheduled for June 29.
