a2 Milk recalls infant formula sold nationwide over heat-resistant toxin

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, (WINK) — The a2 Milk Company is pulling three batches of its infant formula off shelves after finding a heat-resistant toxin in the product.

The company said the a2 Platinum Premium infant formula for babies up to 12 months old contains cereulide, a toxin that hot water can't destroy. Cereulide comes from certain strains of the bacterium Bacillus cereus and can make people sick when they eat contaminated food.

Symptoms usually show up within 30 minutes to six hours and include nausea and vomiting that typically go away within 24 hours. Babies face higher risks because their immune systems are still developing and they can become dehydrated, which may need medical attention.

The recall affects three specific batches sold in 31.7-ounce tins with batch numbers 2210269454, 2210324609 and 2210321712.

The batch number and "Use By" date are printed on the bottom of each tin.

The formula was sold nationwide through the company's website, Amazon and Meijer stores as part of Operation Fly Formula. The company discontinued the product and removed it from sale before starting the recall.

No one has reported getting sick from the formula so far, but the company said people should not use the affected batches.

The a2 Milk Company started the recall after finding cereulide during extra testing. The toxin likely came from an ingredient in the formula.

Parents who bought the product should stop using it right away and either throw it away or return it to the store for a refund.
