FGCU women's tennis gets rare shot at pro competition in Bonita Bay

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. (WINK) — A handful of players on the FGCU women's tennis team will compete in the USTA Finemark Championship in Bonita Bay, a professional-level event that doesn't typically feature collegiate talent.

For years, the relationship between FGCU and Bonita Bay has given these players a unique chance, stepping on the same courts as professional talent in a tournament most college athletes wouldn't otherwise reach. Through wildcards, FGCU players get to experience what competing on the next level really demands and a chance to measure their game against pros.

"I think that it just gives them confidence that they can play at a higher level," said Courtney Vernon, head coach of FGCU women's tennis.

"You know, when you're in the moment of competition, whether that's collegiate, juniors or Pro. You think what you're in is huge, and you know, then you see another level, and it humbles you in a way, but it also motivates you to keep getting better," Vernon said.

Vernon told WINK News that opportunities like this don't come around often, one where her players get the chance to represent their school while testing themselves at a higher level.

The tournament gives the Eagles a rare platform to showcase their skills against professional competition while gaining valuable experience that could shape their future in the sport
