Gulf Coast Humane Society in need of foster home volunteers for orphaned kittens

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)—The Gulf Coast Humane Society is in need of foster home volunteers to help vulnerable baby kittens heal, grow, and feel loved.

The foster program helps the Humane Society, as it receives a larger influx of animals in need of care during the changing seasons.

According to the Humane Society, “many are orphaned kittens and puppies too young for adoption, injured or sick pets who need time to heal, or animals who simply need a quiet break from the shelter environment.”

In addition, the Gulf Coast Humane Society has provided several tidbits one should follow if they encounter a baby kitten(s).

• Initial reactions to seeing a kitten alone might be to provide some aid; however, the GCHS advises against immediate action, as there is a possibility of the kitten’s mother being nearby—likely searching for food.

• If that occurs, then leave the animals alone, as the mother is still caring for the kittens until they become older.

• Once kittens are weaned, around 8 weeks, GCHS volunteers may step in to help the whole family with TNR (trap-neuter-return), which prevents future litters and supports healthier community cats.

• If a kitten is found either sick, injured, or in immediate danger, the GCHS recommends intervening.

• If mom doesn’t come back after an extended period, they may need intervention.
