"Because I'm driving drunk": Man accused of DUI, driving on sidewalk, hitting sign in Cape Coral

LEE COUNTY, Fla. —

A man was arrested in Fort Myers after he was accused of DUI and a hit-and-run in Cape Coral early Sunday morning.

According to the Cape Coral Police Department's arrest report, Tyler Kenneth Procopio, 35, drove a Toyota RAV4 onto the sidewalk outside of Dixie Roadhouse and almost hit two officers. The officers attempted to stop Procopio, but he continued driving east on the sidewalk, hitting a sign before turning south toward Cape Coral Parkway, the report said.

The RAV4 then crossed over the Cape Coral Bridge into Fort Myers before an officer initiated a traffic stop. The officer then asked Procopio if he knew why he was being pulled over, to which Procopio replied, "Because I'm driving drunk," the report said.

The officer noticed that Procopio had glassy eyes, slurred speech and smelled strongly of alcohol, according to the report. A Lee County deputy responded to the scene and arrested Procopio.

He faces charges of DUI and hit-and-run with damage to property.
