Car chase with troopers along canal ends with driver arrested in Lehigh Acres

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. —

A man was arrested after being accused of running from Florida Highway Patrol troopers after an attempted traffic stop in Lehigh Acres Wednesday night.

According to FHP, troopers attempted to stop a Hyundai Genesis for speeding on SR-82 and Sunshine Boulevard. The car did not stop, and instead drove off the road and travelled west along a canal between Gifford Avenue North and Navajo Avenue.

The driver, later identified as Joshua Gillen, 18, then exited the car and ran away from troopers, heading south, FHP said. Troopers detained the passenger of the car and were able to get a description of Gillen.

Troopers worked with Lee County deputies and responded to the address of the registered owner of the car. Gillen was found inside the residence and arrested.

Gillen faces charges of fleeing/eluding law enforcement, reckless driving and resisting arrest without violence.
