Man accused of killing Fort Myers woman with mallet faces first-degree murder indictment, death penalty saught

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — Florida State Attorney Amira Fox has announced a grand jury indictment of Rolbert Joachin, a Haitian man accused of killing a woman with a mallet in early April.

On Thursday, Fox announced the first-degree murder indictment charges against Joachin, who, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, came to Florida illegally and is facing murder charges for the death of Nilufa Yasmine in Fort Myers.

Fox stated that the Joachin case has been reviewed by a Lee County grand jury, leading to the indictment. In addition, the state’s attorney's office is seeking the death penalty. 

WINK News confirmed that Joachin was here under Temporary Protected Status, a program that allows people from countries like Haiti to live and work in the U.S. legally. He has since been stripped of that privilege and now faces deportation.
