Naples Zoo celebrates first-generation Toco Toucan newborn ahead of Mother's Day

NAPLES, Fla. (WINK) — Ahead of Mother’s Day, Naples Zoo announced the arrival of a Toco Toucan chick born in early April.

The hatchling, named Mango, has been under the care of Naples Zoo staff since being born.

According to the zoo, Mango's birth serves as a meaningful way to celebrate mothers everywhere while highlighting the Zoo’s ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation.

Mango is the hatchling of a male toucan named Manu, who arrived at Naples Zoo from the San Diego Zoo, and has helped raise chicks before being paired with the Zoo’s resident female, Macy, a first-time mother.

Mango has earned the designation as the first-ever toucan chick to hatch at Naples Zoo, according to Animal Operations Manager Robin Ryan.

“Manu quickly stepped into his role as an attentive parent while Macy adjusted to her new responsibilities. Toucan chicks depend on both parents during their first few months.”

Naples Zoo shared some facts regarding the Toco Toucan. Recognized by its vibrant orange bill, the South American native bird is known for their unique behaviors and vocalizations, with their calls commonly described as “frog-like” croaks.

While capable of flight, toco toucans often prefer to hop from branch to branch.
