Must-have apps as the Gulf Coast prepares for hurricane season

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Hurricane season is just weeks away, and experts are encouraging people to prepare by downloading apps that can assist with storm readiness and recovery.

“We buy batteries and flashlights to prepare for a power outage. We buy food and water in case we’re stuck at home for a few days," said John Joyce, CEO of CRS Technology Consultants. "Today, there are plenty of apps that prepare you for a hurricane and provide resources after a storm.”

Recommended apps include:

-Gulf Coast News App: provides real-time weather alerts, safety information, and local news updates

-NHC Hurricane Tracker: offering satellite animations, forecast tracks, and spaghetti models

-NOAA Weather Radio: which features over 200 radio broadcasts, weather forecasts, and push alerts.

Joyce also suggests checking for apps provided by local governments, such as the LeePrepares app for Lee County and the Collier Cares app for Collier County. For post-storm recovery, he recommends downloading the FEMA app and the American Red Cross app.

“Finally, open settings to check your notifications. Enable emergency alerts and public safety alerts,” Joyce said.
